When your trip involves 4 different airlines, you need to celebrate with small victories - preferably with an outstanding meal like the one I enjoyed immensely at the Madrid airport's Urban Grill. Fantastic ribs and the most beautiful and delicious asparagus I've ever had...
FINALLY...OVIEDO!
This was not my first visit to the wonderful town of Oviedo. In October 2015, 9 of us finished our Portugal/Spain trip with a stop in this capital city (since the 18th century) of Asturias. Here is the blog entry for that wonderful 24 hours...
I absolutely love Oviedo, especially its art - as evidenced by the multitude of outside sculptures throughout the city. I thoroughly enjoyed my return visit to many of them, as well as my new experiences with others.
I love the Regent's facial expression - clearly she is her own woman and doesn't really care what anyone else thinks or says
about her wanton behavior.
The thinker is still thinking -
probably about so many more things today.
The naked bodies remain defiant.
The Culis Monumentalibus has reached astounding proportions - probably the result of too much sedentary screen time
and not enough gym time.
And Tomas and Cecilia seem
to have weathered their marriage obstacles.
Now there is a new series of sculptures, "The Maternidad," by Fernando Botero (my favorite sculptor) and others. The facial expressions of the mothers are extremely detailed.
Sculptor: Felix Alonso Arena
Other fascinating sculptures include...
"Gitana" by Sebastian Mirand Ovetense
"Suscripcion Popular" by Monolo Linares
I couldn't resist sneaking this photo (ha ha)
"Tino Casal"
"La Torera" by Maura Alvarez Fernandez
D. Manuel Fernandez Avello
"Berrocal"
The stunning architecture of Oviedo...

Basilica de San Juan El Real
One of the most interesting and entertaining parts of the day involved investigating some great dance music in Parque San Francisco. Turns out there was a major fundraiser going on to for fresh water wells for clean drinking water in Africa. Students, parents and teachers alike were running laps for the worthy cause. It was so heartwarming to watch their joy!
